Erin Patterson, 50, testified in court about her life, her relationship with her estranged husband Simon, her family dynamics, and the tragic lunch incident that led to the deaths of her former parents-in-law, Don and Gail Patterson. Patterson described her initial meeting with Simon at the Monash City Council in 2004 and the development of their relationship through discussions on life, religion, and politics. Initially an atheist, she converted to Christianity after attending a service led by the Wilkinson family. Patterson detailed her close relationship with Don and Gail, noting that she was walked down the aisle by Simon’s cousin, David Wilkinson, during her wedding in June 2007. The couple embarked on a road trip across Australia before settling in Perth, where Patterson gave birth to their son. Despite the initial excitement, the couple faced significant communication issues, which led to their first separation in Townsville. Patterson expressed her concerns about growing distance from the wider Patterson family in the months leading up to the tragic lunch in 2023. She described her health anxieties and reliance on 'Dr. Google' for self-diagnosis, suspecting conditions ranging from ovarian cancer to multiple sclerosis. Patterson also discussed her financial situation, revealing an inheritance from her grandmother and mother, which was used to assist Simon’s siblings in purchasing their homes. Despite the separation in 2015, she maintained a connection with Simon and his family, although she felt their relationship had become more distant over time. The trial continues as the court examines the events and motivations surrounding the fatal lunch.
