Violette Perry, a New Zealand student-athlete, has made remarkable strides in both academics and sports during her time at Yale University. As the first in her family to attend university, let alone an Ivy League institution, Perry has shattered expectations and set a precedent for her whānau. Her journey began with a dual focus on track and field and water polo, but after a shoulder injury, she dedicated herself fully to water polo. It was during her sophomore year that the men’s team coach noticed her potential and invited her to train with the men’s team. Perry’s experience in the men’s league was described as 'crazy and unique,' highlighting the physical intensity of the sport. Despite being an outlier, she was treated with respect and support by her coach and teammates, who she considers 'like my family.' Perry also shared her views on transgender women's inclusion in female sports, emphasizing the need to preserve competitive integrity.
