Auckland's McDonald's New Restaurant Gets Green Light Despite Community Concerns
In the Ōrākei district of Auckland, a new McDonald's drive-through restaurant has finally been approved despite opposition from local residents.
This new location on Kepa Road will replace the previous store managed by the last operator.
Originally, McDonald's applied for a site license in 2023 to open a drive-through restaurant on Kepa Road. However, local residents quickly organized against the project, citing concerns over children's health, litter, and noise from traffic.
Although the initial application was rejected, McDonald's returned in 2024 with revised plans. The company stated that these changes were made to address community concerns and provide additional meal options for staff who worked on轮班.
The previous owner had already demolished the site in February 2024.
Ultimately, McDonald's latest application was approved by Auckland City Council's Resources Management Committee, subject to certain conditions. These include ensuring the restaurant operates in accordance with the Resource Management Act and does not disrupt nearby residents.
A McDonald's spokesperson said: 'We are obviously pleased that the committee made this decision and will continue to move forward with the project.' Auckland City Council's Acting Mayor Desley Simpson said, while some community members may be disappointed by the decision, it must be respected as long as all conditions are met. He added that if anyone disagrees with the decision, they can appeal within 15 working days to the Environment Court.
Overall, McDonald's new Ōrākei restaurant has been approved despite opposition, though some concerns remain. The decision has been supported by the company, however.
