Napier-Taupao highway partial roadworks speed limit to be restored from 80km/h to 100km/h

• A partial roadworks speed limit of 100km/h is to be restored on the Napier-Taupao highway in Taupao district.


• The new speed limit will come into effect from Friday next week (May 24, 2025).


• This decision was made based on public opinion and policy considerations.



• According to NZTA Waka Kotahi, the new speed limits will apply between SH5/Waipunga Road junction westwards for about 100 metres to SH5/Matea Road junction eastwards for about 1 km.



• NZTA previously adjusted speed limits in some areas in 2022, including rural areas such as Taware and Tapohoe.



• NZTA stated that the decision was made to comply with Rule 2024 Setting Speed Limits, which allows the government to manage roads for improved economic efficiency, productivity, travel speed and safety.



• Earlier, NZTA conducted public opinion surveys in Taware and Tapohoe, but the number of people supporting retaining lower speed limits was less than 50%, so they decided to restore the 100km/h limit.



• This adjustment will help improve traffic conditions on the road and provide safer and more convenient travel for local residents and tourists.
