How to Get Away with Murder: A Writer's Journey from Legal Career to Crime Thriller
The How to Get Away with Murder writer Paris talks about how she got into writing from law to crime fiction.
In a Newstalk ZB interview, Paris revealed that her sister's serious illness in 2020 changed everything for her. It was this experience that led her to explore writing as a career path.
Paris studied at Auckland University and eventually wrote *How to Get Away with Murder*, a popular crime novel based on a family with hidden dark secrets. The book won the Phoenix Prize and has been adapted into a film by Hollywood.
Despite the flexibility of writing work, Paris admits there are serious emotional risks involved in creating literature. She explained that her writing process often allows characters to explore difficult emotions without judgment.
Paris recalled how she initially didn't realize the connection between her own life experiences and the story she was writing. 'When I started writing it was just a story,' she said. 'But after editing, I realized many parts of the book were influenced by my past."
'I hope that people will relate to these stories and maybe find some direction in their own lives,' Paris concluded.
