Australia Police Appointment

Australia's New Police Chief Named

Australia's Victoria Police have announced the appointment of Mike Bush as their new chief police officer. Jacinta Allan, the CEO of Victoria Police, made this announcement recently, along with Victoria Minister for Police Anthony Carbines who expressed strong support.

Mike Bush previously served as New Zealand's police commissioner from 2014 to 2020. During his tenure, he was criticized for his role in several high-profile incidents, including the Christchurch cathedral attacks, a volcanic eruption on the island of Wa/packages and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite these challenges, Bush became New Zealand's first police commissioner to be appointed due to involvement in terrorist activities. During his time in New Zealand, he led emergency response efforts following the Christchurch attacks in 2019 and provided valuable intelligence during the COVID-19 pandemic early on.

Victoria Premier Jacinta Allan stated:

"We have selected the most suitable person for this role to ensure the safety of our citizens. Mike Bush will bring fresh leadership and enhance public trust in the police."

During his time as New Zealand's police commissioner, Bush implemented measures that increased public confidence in the police force, including reducing crime rates, strengthening early intervention efforts, and improving officer well-being.

Following Bush's appointment, acting Police Commissioner Rick Nugent will continue to lead the Victoria Police force. Bush is expected to complete his five-year term before taking on the full role of chief police officer.
