Restoring the Land: A Farmer's Journey in the Bay of Plenty

The Puriri farm, once a legacy of their grandparents, is now facing severe challenges due to overgrazing and illegal logging. This couple, now in their late fifties, has dedicated nearly two decades to restoring the land.

With the help of QEII Trust Fund and local community support, they have initiated reforestation efforts. Wetlands have been restored, soil stability improved, and local flora like rātā, rimu, and kohekohe is being replanted.

They are also actively engaging schoolchildren through farm tours, teaching the importance of environmental stewardship.

Despite the daunting task ahead, they remain committed to their cause. Their vision for the future includes attracting more supporters and volunteers.

For a seasoned farmer like them, this work is both challenging and deeply rewarding. As one said, "If I'm not happy, I'll stay here all day, breathing fresh air."
