Paul Taylor to retire after final Wellington Phoenix match

In a farewell gesture, coach Paul Taylor will conclude his time with Wellington Phoenix following his second season. The final game of his career will take place during the Easter Sunday match against Simon's Town.

Taylor said he wanted to leave in a dramatic way:

“I want to bang out my farewell.”

This will be Taylor's ninth year with Wellington Phoenix, and he reflected on his time there:

“Coming here and working for the team has been an important part of my life, both personally and family-wise.”

Despite a near decade-long tenure where the team finished eighth each season (and failed to make the playoffs this year), Taylor expressed regret over not achieving better results:

“I know that football results are what matter, but we didn’t get the results we deserved. It’s my responsibility.”

During his first season, Taylor led the team to eighth place, but this season also saw them miss the playoffs.

Historical context

In past matchups between Wellington Phoenix and Simon's Town in A-League women’s play, the teams have only met once with a victory for Simon's Town.
