New Zealand Officials Engage Israel Over Flotilla Incident Involving Three Kiwis

New Zealand foreign affairs officials have reached out to their Israeli counterparts following concerns that three New Zealand citizens are aboard the Global Sumud Flotilla, a large-scale maritime initiative aimed at challenging Israel’s blockade of Gaza. The flotilla, which includes a diverse group of activists and politicians, notably Swedish environmental advocate Greta Thunberg, set sail from Spain last month with the goal of reaching Gaza.

According to reports, Israeli Navy forces intercepted and boarded several vessels—including the Alma, Sirius, and Adara—around 8:30 pm Gaza time (equivalent to 8:30 am in New Zealand) in international waters. The flotilla has confirmed these incidents, though it also noted that livestreams and communication from other ships have been disrupted or lost.

One of the three New Zealanders on board, Samuel Leason, shared a video on social media in which he claimed he had been 'kidnapped' by Israeli forces. This statement has raised further concerns among New Zealand officials and the public.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade has confirmed that it is aware of the interception and has contacted the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Ankara. The ministry is seeking consular assistance for the New Zealand nationals aboard the flotilla. It reiterated that the safety of New Zealand citizens is of the utmost importance and that any New Zealanders present should be treated in accordance with international law. These expectations have been communicated to Israel on multiple occasions.

While the ministry has chosen not to comment on individual cases due to privacy concerns, it stated that practical consular advice has been provided to the groups in contact with the affected New Zealanders. Additionally, the ministry reiterated its longstanding warning against New Zealand citizens attempting to enter Gaza by sea, emphasizing that such actions violate Israeli naval restrictions and pose significant risks.

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has stated that the interception reinforces the government’s long-standing advice not to travel to Gaza. He emphasized that this guidance has been a clear and consistent message for a prolonged period and reiterated that the government expects Israeli authorities to uphold international legal standards in handling any New Zealand citizens involved.

This incident has once again brought the complex geopolitical tensions surrounding the Gaza blockade into the spotlight. While the flotilla’s mission is framed as a humanitarian and political effort, the involvement of New Zealand citizens has added a significant diplomatic dimension to the situation. As the situation develops, New Zealand’s foreign affairs ministry will continue to monitor the status of its nationals and advocate for their rights and safety.

In light of these events, the government is expected to maintain a firm but measured approach, balancing international law with the protection of its citizens abroad. The incident also underscores the broader implications of such activism in volatile regions and the potential consequences for individuals involved.
