New Zealand Authorities Seize Record 2000 Litres of GBL Worth $14 Million
Major Drug Seizure in New Zealand: Largest-Ever GBL Haul Confiscated
In a significant operation, New Zealand police and Customs have seized what is believed to be the largest-ever haul of gamma butyrolactone (GBL), commonly known as 'Fantasy' or 'liquid ecstasy.' The seizure took place at the border in Wellington and involved nearly 2000 litres of the substance, valued at approximately $14 million on the street.
Four individuals were arrested in connection with the incident, and they have since appeared in Wellington District Court on charges including the importation of GBL and methamphetamine, as well as possession for supply of various illicit substances such as GBL, methamphetamine, and cocaine. Two of the suspects have been remanded in custody, and the remaining two are expected to appear in court again on September 15 and 22.
According to Chief Customs officer for regional investigations, Rachael Manning, this seizure is believed to be the largest drug seizure at New Zealand’s border to date. The operation, known as Operation Hermes, was conducted over six months and led by the National Organised Crime Group. The success of the operation was made possible through customs intelligence, which enabled investigators to identify the smuggling method used by the suspects.
A controlled delivery was coordinated as part of the investigation, allowing authorities to gather sufficient evidence to support the charges against the suspects. As part of the asset recovery phase, police have also seized boats and vehicles believed to be used in the drug trafficking operation.
Detective Inspector Darrin Thompson emphasized that the operation has significantly disrupted a transnational criminal network and prevented the biggest-ever import of GBL from reaching the streets of Wellington. In addition to the GBL, over 10kg of methamphetamine was intercepted, with an estimated street value of around $3.75 million.
Authorities are now working with international partners to identify any individuals connected to the investigation overseas. Thompson noted that the efforts have had a substantial impact on the criminal network, causing severe disruption to the supply chain and contributing to the safety of New Zealand from the threat of illicit substances.
This operation highlights the ongoing commitment of New Zealand’s law enforcement agencies to combat drug trafficking and protect the public from the harmful effects of illicit drugs.
