Gang Violence Sparks Community Concern in Horowhenua

The situation in Horowhenua has escalated dramatically following a wave of gang-related shootings, prompting a heightened police response and raising deep concerns among local residents. The mayor of the district, Bernie Wanden, has expressed growing unease over the recent events, particularly the alarming number of firearms found during police operations and the interconnected nature of the incidents.

Following four gang-related shootings within a span of three days, a Gang Conflict Warrant was issued for the areas of Ōtaki, Shannon, Foxton, and Levin. This warrant grants police additional powers, including the ability to search vehicles without a warrant, as they investigate the ongoing criminal activity. By Saturday evening, law enforcement had already seized four firearms and a large knife, underscoring the seriousness of the threat.

Mayor Wanden acknowledged the increased police presence in Levin as a positive development, noting that it has provided a sense of reassurance to the local community. However, he also emphasized the broader concerns regarding the persistent criminal behavior and the potential for further violence if the root causes of the conflict are not addressed.

According to Manawatū area commander Inspector Ross Grantham, the shootings are believed to be linked to internal tensions within a gang, with both the Mongrel Mob and Nomads known to have a presence in the region. Police have been conducting vehicle searches and have uncovered firearms and a knife, in addition to investigating drug importation and dealing. Inspector Grantham stressed that the community has a right to feel safe in their neighborhoods and to carry out their daily lives without fear.

Horowhenua, located in the southern part of the Manawatū region, is home to Levin, the district's largest town. The recent events have placed the community on high alert, and local leaders are working closely with law enforcement to ensure public safety and address the underlying issues fueling the violence.
