New Zealand Mother and Son Released After Three-Week Detention in Texas
Sarah Shaw, a New Zealand mother of four, and her six-year-old son Isaac have been released from an immigration detention facility in Texas, U.S., after being held for more than three weeks. The family's ordeal has sparked widespread concern over the treatment of detained immigrants and the complexities of U.S. immigration policies.
Shaw was detained at the Canadian border when she attempted to re-enter the United States without both parts of her visa approved. The incident occurred after she returned from a trip to New Zealand with her two other children, Grace and Seth, who had traveled to visit their grandparents. Isaac was not part of the trip as he was too young to travel unaccompanied.
During the three weeks of detention, Shaw and Isaac were held at the Dilley Immigration Processing Centre in Texas, a facility known for its harsh conditions. According to their family friend and GoFundMe organizer, Victoria Besancon, the pair were subjected to treatment that resembled prison conditions, including being denied the right to wear their own clothing and being socially isolated.
Shaw’s lawyer, Minda Thorward, explained that the mother had a temporary immigration document allowing her to travel and re-enter the U.S., but an administrative error with the document led to her detention. Despite this, legal challenges are still ongoing, and the family remains in a precarious position regarding their immigration status.
A GoFundMe page set up by Besancon to support the family raised over $56,000 (NZD $94,500) in just a few days, highlighting the community’s support and concern for the family’s well-being. Besancon stated that the family plans to share more details about their experience in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention in the coming days.
Now safely back in Washington, the family is working to rebuild their lives. Besancon expressed hope that the Shaws will be able to reintegrate into their daily routines without further disruption. However, the incident has raised serious questions about the treatment of detained immigrants and the need for reform in U.S. immigration detention practices.
As this story unfolds, it serves as a reminder of the human cost behind complex immigration policies and the urgent need for more humane treatment of those caught in the system.
