Man Admits to Stabbing Woman 18 Times Outside Police Station

A 23-year-old man, James Tuwhangai, has admitted to the attempted murder of a woman after stabbing her 18 times outside the Taumarunui Police Station last year. The incident, which occurred on or about October 21, left the victim in a critical condition requiring extensive surgery, according to Crown Solicitor Jacinda Hamilton.

During a brief appearance in the High Court at Hamilton before Justice Kiri Tahana, Tuwhangai admitted the charge. The judge noted that she had received four reports assessing Tuwhangai’s mental health and determined that while he was mentally impaired, he was not unfit to stand trial.

The victim’s condition remains a key focus of the case. Justice Tahana ordered further, more up-to-date medical information about the victim, including the extent of treatment she has received and her current health status. Crown Solicitor Jacinda Hamilton will also organise a more up-to-date summary of the facts surrounding the incident.

When questioned about the interim name suppression, Tuwhangai’s lawyer, Kerry Burroughs, confirmed that it had now lapsed. Burroughs requested that the case be referred to restorative justice to determine if the victim was willing to meet with his client before sentencing. He noted that while such a meeting might be successful, it might not be.

Justice Tahana agreed to the request and ordered a pre-sentence report. Tuwhangai was remanded in custody for sentencing on October 21, a year to the day after the attack. This decision reflects the severity of the crime and the need for a thorough assessment of the circumstances and the defendant’s current state.

This case highlights the importance of addressing both the victim’s needs and the complex mental health considerations of the accused. The court’s approach underscores a balance between accountability and the potential for rehabilitation, while ensuring that the victim’s voice is heard in the process.
