Five Al Jazeera Journalists Killed in Targeted Israeli Strike in Gaza

In a shocking and tragic incident, five Al Jazeera journalists, including the well-known Arabic correspondent Anas al-Sharif, were killed in a targeted Israeli air strike in Gaza. The attack occurred on Sunday when a journalists’ tent near Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City was bombed, killing Al Jazeera’s entire reporting team in the area.

According to Al Jazeera, the victims included Anas al-Sharif and Mohammed Qreiqeh, as well as camera operators Ibrahim Zaher, Mohammed Noufal, and Moamen Aliwa. The director of Al-Shifa hospital confirmed that the attack targeted the journalists’ tent, which was located outside the main gate of the hospital.

Al-Sharif, 28, was a prominent Arabic correspondent for Al Jazeera who had extensively covered events in northern Gaza. His death comes amid weeks of threats from Israel, which accused him of being a Hamas operative—a claim that both Al-Sharif and Al Jazeera have consistently denied.

Israel’s military claimed that it had struck Al-Sharif, calling him a ‘terrorist’ who ‘posed as a journalist.’ The IDF reportedly stated that Al-Sharif served as the head of a Hamas terrorist cell and was responsible for advancing rocket attacks against Israeli civilians and military personnel.

In the days leading up to his death, Al-Sharif posted on social media about the relentless bombings in Gaza City. After the strike, a final message was posted on his X account, which read:

‘This was what our dear beloved Anas requested to be published upon his martyrdom. This is my will and my final message. If these words of mine reach you, know that Israel has succeeded in killing me and silencing my voice. Allah knows I gave every effort and all my strength to be a support and a voice for my people, ever since I opened my eyes to life in the alleys and streets of the Jabalia refugee camp. Do not forget Gaza… And do not forget me in your righteous prayers for forgiveness and acceptance.’

Al Jazeera has previously condemned what it called a ‘campaign of incitement’ by the Israeli military against its reporters in Gaza, especially Anas al-Sharif. The network has expressed deep concern over the targeting of its journalists and the broader implications for press freedom in the region.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) had earlier warned that Al-Sharif’s life was in danger due to his reporting from Gaza. The CPJ also called on the international community to protect him, expressing fears that an assassination attempt might be carried out.

Palestinian journalists’ groups have also strongly condemned the killings, emphasizing the need for the international community to uphold press freedom and hold those responsible for these attacks accountable. The UN Special Rapporteur Irene Khan had previously stated that Israel’s claims against Al-Sharif were unsubstantiated.

According to the CPJ, at least 186 journalists and media workers have been killed in Gaza since the start of the war on October 7, 2023. This alarming figure highlights the escalating danger faced by media professionals in conflict zones.

The pattern of Israel labeling journalists as militants without credible evidence raises serious questions about its intent and respect for press freedom. As international observers and human rights groups have repeatedly emphasized, journalists are civilians and must never be targeted in any conflict.

In light of these developments, the international community must take urgent and concrete steps to ensure the safety of journalists and to hold perpetrators of such attacks accountable. The loss of Anas al-Sharif and his colleagues is a profound tragedy that underscores the urgent need for global action to protect press freedom and the lives of those who report the truth in the face of adversity.
