After nearly five months on the International Space Station (ISS), an international team of four astronauts aboard SpaceX's Crew Dragon spacecraft began their journey back to Earth today. American astronauts Anne McClain and Nichole Ayers, Japanese astronaut Takuya Ohnishi, and Russian astronaut Kirill Peskov are expected to spend more than 17 hours in flight, splashing down in the waters off the coast of California at 3:33 p.m. GMT tomorrow (11:33 p.m. Taiwan Time on the 9th). They are executing the 10th crew rotation mission for the International Space Station under NASA's Commercial Crew Program. This program was born out of a collaboration with the private sector to continue the legacy of the shuttle era. The Crew Dragon spacecraft detached from the International Space Station at 10:15 p.m. GMT tonight. When it re-enters Earth's atmosphere, its extremely high speed will slow down, and after opening large parachutes, its speed will further decrease, resulting in a gentler landing. After the spacecraft splashes down, SpaceX's recovery ship will use a crane to lift it onto the deck. Only after these steps will the four astronauts be able to exit the spacecraft and take their first breath of Earth's air in several months.
