Customs Seizes 3kg of Suspected Cocaine Worth HK$2.4m from 63-Year-Old Female Traveler at Hong Kong International Airport
Customs in Hong Kong cracked down on a drug trafficking case at Hong Kong International Airport yesterday (8th), intercepting a 63-year-old female traveler. She traveled from Freetown, Sierra Leone, via Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to Hong Kong. When customs officers inspected her checked baggage, they found 3kg of suspected cocaine hidden in the compartment of her luggage, estimated to be worth around HK$2.4 million. She was subsequently arrested. The arrested woman has been charged with one count of trafficking dangerous drugs, and the case will be heard at the West Kowloon Magistrates' Court next Monday (11th). Customs stated that they will continue to strengthen the fight against drug trafficking based on intelligence analysis, while also urging the public to remain vigilant and not be tempted by financial interests to participate in drug trafficking activities. They also emphasized that citizens should not accept any employment or commission to transport controlled items in or out of Hong Kong, and should not recklessly assist others in transporting items without confirming their nature. Customs will continue to select travelers from high-risk areas for customs inspections based on risk management principles to effectively combat cross-border drug trafficking activities. Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, drug trafficking is a serious offense, and upon conviction, the maximum penalty is a fine of HK$5 million and life imprisonment. The public can report suspected drug trafficking activities by calling Customs' 24-hour hotline at 182 8080, or through the dedicated crime reporting email account ([email protected]) or online form (eform.cefs.gov.hk/form/ced002).
