The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) today released its second-quarter report on the situation in mainland China this year. The report mentions that China is using the 'three 80th anniversaries' to assert its sovereignty over Taiwan, and its pressure on Taiwan continues unabated. The report points out that China emphasizes that this year marks the 80th anniversaries of the victory in the War of Resistance against Japan, the restoration of Taiwan, and the establishment of the United Nations, and continues to assert its sovereignty over Taiwan through media propaganda and cross-strait exchange activities. For example, Chinese President Xi Jinping published a signed article in Russian media in May, stating that 'Taiwan's return to China is an important component of the victory in World War II and the post-war international order,' and 'a series of documents with international legal effect, including the Cairo Declaration and the Potsdam Proclamation, confirm China's sovereignty over Taiwan.' Additionally, Wang Huning, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, emphasized during his opening remarks at the Straits Forum in June that 'the restoration of Taiwan is a national memory and shared glory for the Chinese people, and history must be remembered, and the achievements of victory must be protected.' The report states that China continues to pressure Taiwan, including unilaterally announcing the activation of the M503 air route W121 connection route, the Ministry of Commerce announcing the inclusion of eight so-called 'pro-independence' Taiwanese entities on an export control list, and the Mainland China's Straits Office announcing disciplinary actions against enterprises led by Shen Tucheng, the father of DPP legislator Shen Boyang. China is using both soft and hard measures against Taiwan, exerting pressure while also hosting cross-strait exchange activities, inviting media professionals from both sides to attend conferences on the mainland, using these occasions to promote its political claims over Taiwan, and trying to create an atmosphere that cross-strait exchanges are unstoppable. Relevant mainland departments continue to advance multiple 'promotion of integration' measures, emphasizing the leading demonstration role of Fujian for Taiwan; in order to attract the younger generation, they introduced a measure to exempt the document fee for the first application of the Taiwan compatriot certificate, trying to attract 'first-time visitors' to come to the mainland.
