The U.S. Department of Justice stated that a man has been charged with stealing ancient Chinese manuscripts worth $216,000 from the UCLA Library. The man took these ancient texts under the pretense of borrowing them, but returned them with fakes. According to the indictment, 38-year-old Jeffery Ying borrowed ancient texts from the library under multiple aliases, some of which are over 600 years old. Days after borrowing these texts, he returned them with counterfeit manuscripts, and afterward frequently traveled to China. Police found multiple blank copies with the same style as the stolen ancient texts in his hotel room, and also seized prepared property labels, possibly used to make fake books to return to the library. If the charge of stealing important cultural property is proven, Jeffery Ying could face up to 10 years of federal imprisonment.
