Under pressure from China, Bangkok Art and Culture Centre, one of Thailand's most important galleries, has modified or removed works in an exhibition that examined how Beijing treats ethnic minorities and Hong Kong. Artists stated that this is another instance of China suppressing critical voices abroad. The exhibition, titled 'Conspiracies: Visualizing the Global Authoritarian Unification Machine,' explores how authoritarian governments in different countries collaborate across borders, with works from artists who have fled from Tibet, Xinjiang, Russia, Iran, Syria, and other regions. Some works have already been removed or covered, including a multimedia installation by a Tibetan artist, as well as sections involving the names of Hong Kong, Tibetan, and Uyghur artists. One of the curators stated that the Chinese embassy exerted pressure through Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Bangkok Municipal Government, demanding the exhibition be stopped. Artist Sai stated that he has already fled Thailand, as Thai police are after him. He cited messages from contacts stating that Chinese officials have once again demanded the removal of leaflets and reiterated the need to 'implement the one-China policy.' Artists believe that this incident sends a chilling message to all artists and activists who have fled to the region.
