Worker Shot Dead with Air Gun While Using the Toilet in a Field, Police Report

In a tragic incident that has shocked the local community, a 55-year-old construction worker was shot dead with an air gun while using the toilet in a field near a construction site in Nanchang, Jiangxi Province. The incident occurred on the night of July 6, 2025, and was discovered the following morning by police officers searching for the missing worker.

What Happened?

According to the police report, the victim, identified as Yu You, was working on a construction site for a major infrastructure project. After finishing his shift, he left the site to use the restroom in a nearby field. He was later found by police approximately 800 meters away from the construction site, where he had been shot in the head with an air gun. The bullet had passed through his left eyebrow and exited from the right back of his head.

The police investigation revealed that two suspects, Qu Xu and Luo Xiao, were hunting with an air gun in the area on the night of the incident. In the darkness, Qu Xu mistook Yu You, who was squatting in the field, for a target and fired the air gun, resulting in the worker's death.

Family Struggles with the Aftermath

Yu You’s family described him as the primary breadwinner for his household, supporting his wife and three children. His wife, who cannot speak Mandarin, often stayed in their hometown of Loudi, Hunan Province, while Yu You traveled to cities for work. He had been working on the construction site in Nanchang for about two months before the incident.

Yu You’s family expressed confusion and frustration over the legal implications of the incident. They believe it should be classified as a work-related accident, while the construction company argues that it is a criminal case and not their responsibility. As of now, the company is cooperating with the police and providing support to the family.

Legal Proceedings Underway

Both suspects were arrested on July 8 and are currently being held in custody. The case has been handed over to the local procuratorate for further investigation. The police have confirmed that the incident is being treated as a criminal case and that the investigation is ongoing.

Public Reaction and Calls for Safety

The incident has sparked public concern over the safety of workers in remote areas, especially during late hours. Many have called for stricter regulations on hunting activities near construction sites and for better safety measures for workers who must use the restroom in the field. It is also a reminder of the need for greater awareness and training for workers in such environments.

The community is awaiting the final outcome of the case, hoping for justice for the victim and his family. Meanwhile, efforts are being made to ensure that such a tragedy does not happen again.
