Train and Car Collision in Tokoroa Leaves One Seriously Injured
A serious collision between a train and a car in Tokoroa has left one person with serious injuries. The incident occurred on Bridge Street shortly after 4 a.m. on Thursday, prompting an immediate response from emergency services.
According to a police spokesperson, the crash is currently under investigation. The road was closed for several hours as emergency crews worked to clear the scene and provide assistance to the injured individual. A St John spokesperson confirmed that an ambulance and a rapid response unit were dispatched to the location at 4:06 a.m. The seriously injured person was transported to Waikato Hospital for treatment.
KiwiRail’s acting chief operations officer, Soren Low, confirmed that a freight train was involved in the crash at a level crossing. He noted that the level crossing is equipped with flashing lights and bells to alert drivers of an approaching train. Despite these safety measures, the collision still occurred.
Following track inspections, KiwiRail received clearance to reopen the rail line at approximately 8:50 a.m. The incident has raised concerns about the effectiveness of level crossing safety systems and the need for further improvements to prevent similar accidents in the future.

As the investigation continues, local authorities and rail operators are expected to provide further updates on the circumstances surrounding the crash and the steps being taken to ensure the safety of road and rail users in the area.
