Order of Merit Recipient Shocked to Find Delivery Driver in Her Home
A recipient of New Zealand’s Order of Merit has spoken out about a deeply disturbing experience that occurred in her home in Spain. The incident, which has now prompted an investigation by Spanish authorities, highlights the need for greater oversight in the delivery industry and the responsibility of large corporations to protect their customers.
Disturbing Discovery in Her Home
The British woman, who divides her time between Spain and New Zealand, recounted the incident to The Guardian. She had ordered bug repellent via Amazon Marketplace on July 15, and the delivery was expected to be straightforward. However, when the driver arrived, she let him in and went to the bathroom, only to return and find the man in her bedroom. He was reportedly masturbating vigorously, and the situation escalated when he allegedly ejaculated.
"He was masturbating vigorously. He turned his back, and it was apparent that he ejaculated. He shook his hand and when he turned to me his shorts were wet," she said.
Delivery Driver's Response and Aftermath
The driver, who is in his 20s, claimed he had spilled a drink and was attempting to deliver the package. Despite her request for him to leave, he stayed, and an older colleague eventually intervened to retrieve the package before the two left together.
Two days later, the woman was forced to interact with the same driver again when he returned to deliver a separate package. This second encounter left her feeling “very vulnerable.” She took a photo of the van’s license plate and reported the incident to the police and Amazon’s support services.
Amazon's Response and the Victim's Frustration
In a deeply disheartening turn, the woman was told by an Amazon customer service representative that her experience was merely an “inconvenience.” Amazon clarified that the driver was a commercial contractor, not an employee, and that the company is not directly responsible for the incident. However, the woman felt that Amazon, as a multi-trillion-dollar corporation, should take more responsibility for customer safety.
"As they are making squillions out of this, they absolutely should be spending a good bunch of it making sure customers are safe in their homes," she said.
Ongoing Investigation and Legal Action
Spanish police have now taken a sample of the alleged semen as part of their investigation into the incident. The woman has since decided not to use Amazon’s services again, citing her loss of trust in the company.
This shocking incident has sparked a broader conversation about corporate accountability, the need for stricter oversight of delivery services, and the importance of ensuring customer safety in the home. It also serves as a reminder that even in the most routine transactions, there can be unexpected and deeply unsettling consequences.
Opinion: While the driver’s actions were clearly inappropriate and criminal, the response from Amazon highlights a concerning trend: large corporations often distance themselves from incidents involving their contractors, even when those incidents directly impact their customers. This incident should serve as a wake-up call for companies that rely on third-party contractors to ensure that their business practices are not only profitable but also ethical and safe.
