12-Year-Old Kelia Mehani Gallina Set to Make History as Youngest-Ever WSL Competitor

At just 12 years old, Tahitian surfer Kelia Mehani Gallina is set to become the youngest competitor in the history of the World Surf League (WSL). Her debut on the Champions Tour marks a significant milestone for the sport and for young athletes everywhere. This historic moment will see Gallina take on some of the most experienced surfers in the world, including Australia’s Molly Picklum and American five-time Champions Tour winner Lakey Peterson.

The first day of the Tahiti Pro, where Gallina will compete, is scheduled for Friday, August 8, AEST. The event will bring together the world’s top surfers, but the spotlight will be on Gallina as she steps onto the world stage.

In an interview with ABC Sport, Gallina expressed her excitement and nerves ahead of the competition. "It feels really good, it’s exciting," she said. "It’s going to be complicated, but I guess I’ll just go out and try … I’m pretty sure I’m good. A little stressed out because Molly is definitely one of my heroes. She’s also really good at the barrels, so it’s going to be an interesting heat."

Gallina’s journey to this point has been nothing short of remarkable. The pre-teen won event trials in Tahiti last month, earning a wildcard spot into the final event of the season. This opportunity is a testament to her talent and dedication, and it has already sparked admiration from her peers and mentors alike.

Molly Picklum, who is currently at the top of the WSL Champions Tour rankings, spoke highly of Gallina during her own interview with ABC Sport. "It’d be cool if she was looking up to me, but in the same way, she inspires me. Her technique, and everything, in the barrel is so good," Picklum said. "She’s doing incredible things, and that’s the next generation coming through. It pushes us to keep going further. It’s all I want to, I don’t want to be just sitting at the top and not being pushed."

Picklum, who has already secured her place in the finals, is determined to make the most of this week’s event. "I’m feeling pretty excited. I’ve had such a good year, and to just keep on going right to the end is important," she said. "It’s not celebration time by any means, but it’s definitely [time] to enjoy it and enjoy Tahiti."

The presence of a 12-year-old in a professional surfing event is a powerful reminder of the potential that lies within the next generation of athletes. Gallina’s journey is not just about personal achievement—it’s about breaking barriers and inspiring others to pursue their dreams, no matter how young they may be.

As the world watches, the stage is set for a historic moment in surfing. Whether Gallina takes home the trophy or simply makes her mark on the sport, her presence in the WSL is a story worth celebrating.
