A fatal car accident occurred in Tsuen Wan yesterday (5th), where a 35-year-old Filipino male tourist was dragged by his luggage case as he stepped out of the Como Hotel at No. 8 Yang Wu Road. He was then struck at high speed by a taxi suspected of losing control, resulting in severe injuries to his legs. He was hospitalized for emergency treatment but later died. An 80-year-old male taxi driver is suspected of causing death by dangerous driving and has been arrested. Many relatives and friends of the deceased, Matignas, were shocked by the tragic news and rushed to his Facebook post to leave messages of condolence. Matignas was known to frequently share photos of himself with his family and his beloved dog, as well as pictures of him riding a motorcycle and hanging out with friends on social media, indicating that he was a cheerful and well-liked person before his death.

Matignas posted for the last time on Facebook four days ago (2nd), sharing a post that read, "August will be a month of "God did it" (Divine Will)." After the news of his death spread, many relatives and friends left messages on his post, wishing him peace. Some described the news as hard to accept, while others said Matignas had "gone through a lot" and expressed their longing for him. Many also left messages of comfort for his family; even some who did not know Matignas personally expressed their wish for him to rest in peace.

Matignas was known to frequently post on Facebook, sharing photos of his life. He often rode different types of motorcycles, sometimes went on "adventures" with his dog, or traveled with his family. Last September, he uploaded a photo with his mother, celebrating her birthday. This June, he uploaded a video wishing his sister a happy 30th birthday. After the fatal accident occurred yesterday, his sister left a message on Matignas's post, saying, "I love you."

The accident occurred around 2 p.m. yesterday, when the 35-year-old Filipino male victim stepped out of the Como Hotel entrance and was severely injured by a taxi in the ground floor passenger drop-off area. He was sent to Margaret Hospital for emergency treatment but was confirmed dead. An 80-year-old taxi driver surnamed Wong is suspected of causing death by dangerous driving and has been arrested. He reportedly felt dizzy and unwell at the time of the accident, which led to the incident. After the accident, he suffered chest pain, head, and hand injuries and was sent to Yen Chai Hospital for treatment.

Video footage from the taxi's dashboard camera shows the taxi crashing into the victim like a "shell." Online videos of the accident show the male victim dragging a suitcase as he stepped out of the hotel entrance, possibly using his phone and walking along the pedestrian path. The taxi then sped toward the victim like a "shell," colliding forcefully with the victim. The victim was momentarily wedged between the column and the taxi's front end before the taxi reversed, and the victim was seriously injured and fell to the ground. The video ends with the victim attempting to sit up.

It is reported that the deceased had come to Hong Kong with a few friends for a trip and was preparing to check out and leave Hong Kong yesterday. Unfortunately, he was struck by the taxi in the ground floor passenger drop-off area of the hotel lobby and died away from home.

The Philippine Consulate in Hong Kong expressed condolences to the deceased's family and is assisting them in handling the aftermath. The Philippine Consulate in Hong Kong confirmed to Hong Kong 01 that a 35-year-old Filipino tourist died in Tsuen Wan due to a car accident yesterday. The Consulate expressed its deepest condolences to the deceased's family and prayed for the deceased's soul to rest in peace. It also stated that it is assisting the deceased's family and expects the family to arrive in Hong Kong to arrange the transportation of the deceased's body.
