Lament of the Elderly Living Alone | The 70-Year-Old Woman Turns to Bones, Neighbors Discover Her Death: You Rest in Peace
Today (6th), in Kowloon Bay, another tragedy involving an elderly person living alone was revealed. Around 10 a.m., a Housing Authority staff member went to Shek Shui Chuen East Estate's Shing Yat Building to reclaim a unit, only to find a skeleton lying on the bed upon entering the unit. After investigation, the police confirmed that the deceased was the 77-year-old Ms. Yuen who lived in the unit.
HK01 visited Shing Yat Building this afternoon. Mrs. Cheung, a neighbor, said that Ms. Yuen's husband and two sons had already emigrated abroad. In the past, Ms. Yuen often complained to her and would ask her to help with massages when she had back pain. However, in the past year or so, she had suddenly disappeared, and no one could see her. This morning, she heard the sound of moving and realized something was wrong. It was only when the reporter arrived to interview that Mrs. Cheung learned of Ms. Yuen's death, and she sighed, saying: 'No matter what, you rest in peace, happily.'
The interior of Ms. Yuen's residence was simple. The kitchen had a refrigerator, a washing machine, and an electric kettle. There were also several bags of items wrapped in plastic bags hanging on the door. On the wall, a couple of red Spring Festival couplets had partially fallen off, and a mask was hanging on the hook below. The bed in the room was suspected to have been soaked by the body fluid from the deceased, and there were some stains on the walls.
Mrs. Cheung admitted that she didn't know Ms. Yuen had already passed away until the reporter arrived. She said that Ms. Yuen moved to Shek Shui Chuen East Estate with her over 20 years ago, and at that time, she had already been living alone. She often complained about her conflicts with her husband and two sons, who had emigrated abroad more than three years ago. However, Mrs. Cheung described Ms. Yuen as having many friends, often going out with friends, and cooking for herself, but she had never seen any relatives visit.
Mrs. Cheung continued, saying that in the past, when Ms. Yuen had back pain, she would ask her to massage her, 'If she was in pain, she would come to me, sometimes every few days, and I would help her stretch her muscles.' However, in the past year or so, Mrs. Cheung noticed that Ms. Yuen had suddenly disappeared: 'In the past, we would greet each other and she would always ask for help with things. But in the past year or so, I haven't seen her at all. Even though we are neighbors, I think it's important to care for each other.'
Mrs. Cheung said that during the past year that Ms. Yuen had been missing, she had never smelled any strange odors, nor had she seen any Housing Authority staff or social workers come to the door. It wasn't until this morning, when she was woken up by the noise of moving, that she saw two police officers sitting on the floor watching, and then several uniformed personnel came to take items away in black bags, and she realized something was wrong.
She admitted that she still didn't know Ms. Yuen had already passed away until the reporter arrived to interview her. As a friend, she said she would light incense for her during the Qingming Festival, saying: 'No matter what, we were friends before, you rest in peace, happily.'
According to the information, Ms. Yuen was not a case being followed by the Social Welfare Department's social workers. When HK01 asked the Social Welfare Department, they said they would try to find the deceased's family to provide appropriate assistance.
