On August 6, 2025, U.S. President Trump signed an executive order imposing a 25% tariff on Indian goods, due to India's direct or indirect import of Russian oil. This move brings the total tariff on Indian goods exported to the U.S. to 50%. The additional tariffs take effect on August 27. India's Foreign Ministry expressed dissatisfaction, stating that these actions are unreasonable and that it will protect its own interests. India is a major buyer of Russian oil, and oil is a primary source of funding for Russia's military operations against Ukraine. The Russia-Ukraine war has lasted over three years without any sign of a ceasefire. Trump previously threatened to impose 'secondary tariffs' on countries that continue trade with Russia, such as China and India.
