Tragic Child Dies in Kaikohe Car Crash

A devastating car crash in Kaikohe on Wednesday afternoon has left one child dead and several others injured, marking a tragic event that has shocked the local community.

According to Detective Senior Sergeant Christan Fouhy, a family was traveling in one of the vehicles involved in the collision. “In that vehicle, multiple occupants were injured, and sadly, a child has lost her life as a result of this crash,” Fouhy said. “I’m unable to confirm further details about the girl at this very early stage.”

Following the crash, occupants of the second vehicle fled on foot. Police confirmed that a man, believed to be the driver, was found shortly after the incident, and a second man was located soon after.

Emergency services, including St John, responded swiftly to the scene with two ambulances, two helicopters, and a rapid response vehicle. One patient was transported by helicopter to Whangārei Hospital, and another to Auckland City Hospital, both in serious condition. Four other patients, suffering from moderate and minor injuries, were taken to Bay of Islands Hospital by ambulance.

Authorities are appealing for witnesses who may have seen a white Toyota Mark X being driven erratically on Orrs Road or in the wider Kaikohe area prior to the crash. “We are particularly interested in sightings of this vehicle,” Fouhy added.

This tragic incident has raised serious questions about road safety in the area and has left the community in shock. Local officials and emergency services are working closely together to investigate the cause of the crash and to support the affected families.

As the investigation continues, the thoughts of the entire community are with the family who has lost their child. The police have urged anyone with information to come forward to help bring clarity to this heartbreaking event.
