Donald Trump Hints JD Vance May Be Republican Nominee for 2028 US Election

By ABC News | August 6, 2025

President Donald Trump has suggested that Vice President JD Vance is the most likely candidate to be the Republican nominee for the 2028 U.S. presidential election. This revelation comes as speculation mounts over Trump's potential bid for a third presidential term, despite the constitutional limits on presidential terms.

During a recent press briefing, Trump remarked, “Well, I think most likely.” He emphasized that Vance, as the vice president, is in a strong position to lead the Republican ticket in the future. Trump also floated the idea of pairing Vance with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio as his running mate, stating, “I think Marco is also somebody that maybe would get together with JD in some form.”

Vance, a former Marine and lawyer, has been a key figure in the administration, serving as the chief domestic policy advocate and a vital diplomatic envoy. He has not yet made a formal announcement about his intentions but has indicated he would consult with Trump before making any decisions.

Rubio, a former Florida senator, has also gained prominence in recent years, becoming the first official since Henry Kissinger to hold both the positions of National Security Adviser and Secretary of State. His potential pairing with Vance could signal a strategic move to consolidate the Republican base ahead of the 2028 election.

While Trump has previously avoided discussing a successor, his recent comments suggest a shift in tone. He admitted that, despite his desire to run again, he may not seek a third term. “I’d like to, I’d like to run. I have the best poll numbers I’ve ever had,” he said, though he also acknowledged that “it’s too early” to make definitive plans.

T-shirts emblazoned with “Trump 2028” and “Rewrite the rules” continue to be sold on Trump’s official online store, indicating a growing grassroots movement in support of his potential return to the political stage. However, the legal and constitutional challenges of a third term remain a significant hurdle.

As the 2028 election cycle approaches, the Republican Party is watching closely. With Trump’s endorsement and the potential emergence of Vance as a future leader, the political landscape is shifting dramatically. The next few years could determine the trajectory of the party and the direction of the United States.

For now, the focus remains on Vance’s performance and the evolving dynamics within the Trump administration. With Trump’s influence still strong, the Republican nomination race may be shaping up to be one of the most competitive in recent history.
