After President Trump imposed tariffs on multiple allies, India has become his latest target. Trump imposed a 25% tariff on Indian goods exported to the US and publicly criticized India's energy cooperation with Russia, even threatening to 'ruin' India's economy. India's Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly opposed this, stating that the US accusations are 'unjustified'. Trump's actions have not only shattered India's optimistic expectations about US-India relations but also exposed contradictions between the US and India in terms of geopolitical and economic interests. As the world's third-largest energy consumer, India is deeply dependent on Russian oil. However, if it goes against US intentions, it will face dual risks of economic and diplomatic nature. Trump's tariff strategy seems to indicate that the US no longer views India as a 'chess piece' to counter China, but rather as a potential economic threat.
