A fatal car accident occurred in Tsuen Wan today (5th), when a taxi is suspected to have veered onto the pedestrian path at the underground entrance of Como Hotel, colliding with and killing a 35-year-old Filipino male tourist. The involved 80-year-old taxi driver is suspected of causing death by dangerous driving and has been arrested. Taxi drivers aged 70 or above must undergo medical examinations at least once every three years. According to the Transport Department's data, as of the end of 2022, there were as many as 120,000 drivers aged 60 or above, accounting for nearly six out of ten of the total number. The number of taxi drivers aged 70 or above involved in accidents rose to 418 in 2021, almost four times that of 2011. Legislator Ho Keng Kong of the New People's Party stated that the government should establish stricter physical examinations and road reaction tests, set a mandatory retirement age applicable to taxis and future regulated ride-hailing services, to ensure road safety.
