Miaoli County Jujube and Hangju Tea Farmers Suffer Heavy Losses

Gongguan Township in Miaoli County is the only jujube industry zone in Taiwan. Currently, it is in the harvest season. Continuous heavy rains have caused severe fruit cracking and falling, resulting in losses of about 80%. In addition, Hangju tea in Tongluo Township has also suffered damage due to wind and rain, with the agricultural association estimating losses could reach 40%. According to the Council of Agriculture, the agricultural disaster losses caused by the heavy rains in the central and southern parts of Taiwan on July 28 have exceeded NT$300 million as of this morning. Statistics show that Miaoli County has suffered losses of NT$12.88 million, accounting for 4%. The county government stated that the jujube planting area in Miaoli County is approximately 100 hectares, with Gongguan Township accounting for the largest share at 84 hectares, followed by Tongluo and Zhuolan Townships at 5 hectares each, as well as some scattered areas. The annual output value exceeds NT$300 million. After the disaster survey, it has met the criteria for natural disaster relief, with NT$80,000 per hectare available for relief funds. Miaoli County Magistrate Chung Tung-chin stated that the jujube farmers have suffered severe losses, almost a total loss. The county will coordinate with the agricultural and finance departments to find a source of funding to provide a subsidy of NT$25,000 per hectare for cleanup costs, and will ask legislators to continue seeking central government subsidies.
