(Central News Agency intern reporters Hong Zhiyin and Ko Tsaiyu, Kuala Lumpur, 5th special report) The ASEAN Energy Centre (ACE) held the opening ceremony of the 25th ASEAN Energy Business Forum (AEBF-25) in Kuala Lumpur on the 4th. The forum is scheduled to be held from October 15th to 17th at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, and will discuss topics such as energy transition and the ASEAN Power Grid (ASEAN Power Grid).
Malaysia's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy and Water Transformation Datuk Seri Fadillah said in his speech that 2025 will be a turning point for energy cooperation among ASEAN countries, as the 'Second Phase of the ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC Phase II, 2021–2025)' is coming to an end, and the action plan for 2026 to 2035 will be launched.
Fadillah said that the enhanced Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the ASEAN Power Grid (APG) was signed in October this year during the ASEAN Energy Ministers' Meeting (AMEM), which will promote regional grid integration and drive multilateral cross-border electricity trade.
Fadillah emphasized that 'the APG is not just an infrastructure project, but also a symbol of ASEAN unity.' He said that the APG can promote the integration of renewable energy, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and build a more resilient energy system.
The Executive Director of the ASEAN Energy Centre (ACE), Datuk Razib Dawood, pointed out that 'energy demand will continue to rise,' and therefore innovation and collaboration are urgently needed to ensure energy security and affordable energy for all.
ASEAN is the world's fifth largest economy, with a population of about 677 million and a GDP of $3.8 trillion. According to the eighth edition of the 'ASEAN Energy Outlook Report (AEO8)' released last year, by 2050, ASEAN's population will grow by 15.8%, and the annual GDP growth rate will be 4%.
The forum will gather energy ministers and representatives from all ASEAN member states, and will also invite representatives from Australia, Canada, China, the European Union, India, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States to participate.
Other participating organizations include: the International Energy Agency (IEA), the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the ASEAN and East Asia Economic Research Institute (ERIA), and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).
Fadillah said that this forum is an open and inclusive platform, allowing ASEAN countries, policymakers, business leaders, investors, researchers, and energy innovators to engage in in-depth exchanges.
The forum will showcase the latest technologies, including clean energy, modernized grids, energy efficiency, green hydrogen, and carbon trading.
