Starting this year, the Tibetan language in Tibet's college entrance exam (university entrance exam) will be changed to an optional subject, causing concerns among Tibetans. Qiangba Puncog, Chairman of the Tibet Autonomous Region Government, stated that this move will help students of all ethnic groups enjoy a more equitable high-quality education and provide more opportunities for students to develop their talents. He emphasized that the Tibetan language remains a subject in the compulsory education curriculum for primary and secondary schools in Tibet and other Tibetan areas, and the curriculum settings for the Tibetan language in the basic education stage remain unchanged and undiminished. This year's college entrance exam in Tibet will divide the test papers into two types: unified test papers and ethnic test papers. Students who choose the ethnic test paper type will have their Chinese and Tibetan language scores each counted as 50% of the total score, which will be used as their Chinese score. This move has sparked dissatisfaction and concern among netizens in Tibet, who pointed out that removing the Tibetan language subject from the college entrance exam system will lead to a comprehensive collapse of the Tibetan language teaching system, bringing the Tibetan language closer to complete disappearance.
