US President Trump stated during an interview with CNBC that if a trade deal is reached between the US and China, he is likely to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping before the end of the year. If no agreement is reached, he will not meet with Xi Jinping. Trump emphasized that the US and China are very close to reaching an agreement and that relations between the two countries are good. In addition, US Treasury Secretary Yellen believes that the US and China have the conditions to reach an agreement. Previously, US and Chinese officials held the third round of trade negotiations in Sweden, attempting to resolve economic disputes and aiming to extend the tariff ceasefire agreement reached in mid-May. The US and China have reached preliminary agreements in May and June, attempting to end tariff retaliation and the interruption of China's rare earth mineral exports. As the deadline of August 12 approaches, China needs to reach a lasting tariff agreement with the US.
