The Japanese Minister in Charge of Economic Revitalization, Akira Amari, stated that he is coordinating a visit to the US from today until the 9th of this month, demanding the Trump administration to lower the US tariffs on Japanese automobiles as soon as possible, and to confirm the content of the reciprocal tariff agreement. If this visit proceeds, it will be the 9th time Akira Amari visits the US to negotiate tariffs. The Japanese and US governments reached an agreement on July 22, Eastern Time in the US, where the US side will reduce the tariffs on Japanese automobiles and reciprocal tariffs to 15%. However, the US authorities have not yet issued the presidential order required to lower the automobile tariffs, and the timing of the issuance remains unclear. Akira Amari will demand the Washington authorities to issue the presidential order as soon as possible. In addition, there are discrepancies in the content of the reciprocal tariffs published by the Japanese and US governments. According to the Japanese government's statement, both sides agreed that for items with current tariffs below 15%, the total reciprocal tariffs will be 15%, and for items with current tariffs above 15%, reciprocal tariffs will not be imposed, treated as a special measure. However, according to the administrative order issued by Trump on July 31, this special measure applies only to the European Union (EU). Furthermore, according to the notice issued by the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to importers on August 4, the statement is the same. Akira Amari said today, "After confirming with the US side, we received the agreement that 'Japan will enjoy the same treatment as the EU and there is no need to worry.'" As the new US reciprocal tariffs will take effect on the 7th of this month, Eastern Time in the US, Akira Amari plans to confirm the relevant matters with US officials again and request handling of the issue.
