NASA and SpaceX successfully launched a crew to the International Space Station (ISS) on Friday, marking a second attempt after a delay caused by weather conditions. The mission, designated Crew 11, includes Commander Zena Cardman, Mike Fincke, Japanese astronaut Kimiya Yui, and cosmonaut Oleg Platonov. The crew will dock at the ISS at 3 a.m. Saturday, following a 16-hour journey. Cardman, who had previously been bumped from a flight to make room for Starliner astronauts, finally fulfills a long-held dream of traveling to space. The crew will replace Crew 10, who are set to return to Earth on August 6 after a 145-day mission. The ISS is expected to remain operational until its planned retirement in 2030, with SpaceX designing a custom spacecraft to deorbit the station safely.
