Soaring Food Prices Prove the Gaza Famine Is Real – and Will Affect Generations to Come

Recent developments in the Gaza Strip have brought the reality of a famine into sharp focus. With food prices soaring to unprecedented levels, the situation is no longer a matter of debate but a stark, undeniable crisis. The economic historian Yannai Spitzer has highlighted that staple food prices in Gaza have increased by a factor of 30 for flour and 50 times for potatoes. These figures are not just alarming—they are historic, echoing the worst famines of the past, such as the Great Bengal Famine of 1943 and the Irish Potato Famine, but on a far more extreme scale.

The roots of this crisis lie in the policies of the Israeli government. Since March, Israel has effectively imposed a food blockade on Gaza, limiting the entry of essential supplies to a handful of
