A Young Victim of a Gang Attack at Avondale Train Station

A 15-year-old boy has been hospitalized following a violent assault at the Avondale Train Station in Auckland, where he was attacked and robbed by a group of youths. According to police, the incident occurred on Sunday and has sparked concerns about public safety on public transport.

Det. Senior Sgt. Anthony Darvill said the teenager had recently disembarked from a train at around 1:30 PM, and was followed off the train by a group of youths who had boarded earlier at New Lynn Station. One of the youths reportedly asked for the teenager’s shoes, leading to an assault near a walkway that leads to Blockhouse Bay Road.

"It is alleged one of the group indicated he wanted the teenager’s shoes, and he was assaulted by several of the youths near a walkway that leads to Blockhouse Bay Rd," Darvill said in a statement.

Police confirmed that a pair of sneakers was taken during the incident, and the 15-year-old required hospital treatment for moderate injuries. Officers arrived at the scene shortly after the attack, and all parties involved had already left by the time they arrived. CCTV footage of the incident has been reviewed as part of the ongoing investigation.

An Auckland Transport spokesperson expressed their concern, stating that the attack was "distressing" and emphasized the importance of customer safety on public transport. "People have the right to feel safe when using public transport," the spokesperson added.

Online posts from the victim's family show images of the boy with visible injuries to his head and eyes, underscoring the severity of the attack. The incident has reignited calls for improved security measures at public transport hubs across the country.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to come forward and are continuing their investigation into the group responsible for the assault.
