According to the New York Times, satellite imagery shows that after one of the strongest earthquakes in decades struck Russia's Far East region last week, a local nuclear submarine base suffered minor damage. According to satellite imagery captured by commercial satellite company Planet Labs, a floating dock at the Rybachiy submarine base, one of the important bases of the Russian Pacific Fleet located on the Kamchatka Peninsula, appears to be seriously damaged. Part of the dock seems to have detached from the mooring area. So far, there has been no official statement regarding the damage to the Rybachiy submarine base, and Russian media have not mentioned it at all. International institutions responsible for monitoring nuclear facilities have not reported any increase in local radiation levels. Some of the floating docks at Rybachiy are new. According to military sources, since Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the Rybachiy base has at least activated and installed two new docks. The Rybachiy base was built during the Soviet era, located inside a bay to prevent ships from being affected by huge waves and storms from the open sea several miles away. Although several docks at the Rybachiy base appear undamaged, one dock shows signs of damage caused by a tsunami triggered by the earthquake.
