Jack Hargreaves Named in Alleged Murder and Robbery Case
August 5, 2025 — A 20-year-old man has been identified as the alleged perpetrator in a shocking case involving the murder of his 31-year-old brother and a subsequent armed robbery. Jack William Hargreaves appeared briefly in the High Court at Hamilton today, facing charges of murder, aggravated robbery, and failing to stop for police.
The incident began on July 9 when police were called to a property on Bellmont Ave in Chartwell, where they discovered the body of Hargreaves’ brother, Joshua. A swift search for Jack Hargreaves followed, with police deploying the Eagle helicopter in an effort to locate him.
The alleged robbery occurred shortly after the murder. According to police, Hargreaves was seen hitchhiking on Gordonton Rd when he allegedly stole a car from a motorist who had stopped to give him a ride. The motorist, though shaken, was unharmed.
At around 12:40 a.m., the police dog unit spotted the stolen vehicle and pursued it north to Ngāruawāhia, where road spikes were deployed to stop the car. Hargreaves was arrested after the vehicle came to a halt.
During his court appearance, Hargreaves’ counsel, Nadine Baier, confirmed that her client no longer wished to maintain name suppression. Additionally, the suppression order regarding Hargreaves’ relationship with his brother was lifted. However, Justice Kiri Tahana ruled that Hargreaves must enter pleas to set a trial date, as Baier was still waiting on further disclosure from the prosecution.
A three-week trial was scheduled for February 14, 2028, with Hargreaves remanded in custody to reappear for a callover in October.
As the case unfolds, the community is left grappling with the tragic events that led to the loss of a young life and the alleged criminal actions of a family member. This case has sparked discussions about the potential for familial violence and the need for stronger interventions in such situations.
