Charges Laid, Vehicle Seized After Shooting Leaves Man in Critical Condition in Lower Hutt

Authorities in Lower Hutt have taken significant steps following a violent incident that left a man with life-threatening injuries. The shooting, which occurred on Sunday morning, has now led to formal charges and the seizure of a vehicle believed to be connected to the suspect.

Emergency services were called to a Stokes Valley address around 9 a.m. after reports of a firearm being discharged. The victim, who was critically injured, was quickly airlifted to Wellington Hospital, where he remains in the Intensive Care Unit in a critical condition.

A suspect, a 25-year-old man from Taitā, was arrested the previous evening and charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, as well as unlawful possession of a firearm. During a court appearance today, the suspect was remanded in custody and is scheduled to reappear in the Hutt Valley District Court on 14 August.

Police have seized a maroon-colored Toyota MarkX station wagon, which is now undergoing forensic examination. Detectives are urging anyone with relevant information to come forward, particularly those who may have recorded footage in specific areas.

“We ask that anyone in or around the Hanson Grove area in Stokes Valley, the Sladden St area in Naenae, as well as Poole St in Taitā, between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. on Sunday 3 August, review any CCTV or dashcam footage they have,” said Detective Sergeant Martin Todd.

“Please get in touch with us if you filmed this station wagon.”

Police have increased their visible presence in the Stokes Valley area and will continue to do so over the coming days. They are appealing to the public for any information that could help in the investigation.

Anyone with relevant information is encouraged to contact police on 105 and quote file number 250803/0624. Alternatively, an anonymous report can be made through Crimestoppers on 0800 0555 111.

This incident has once again highlighted the importance of community vigilance and the role of the public in assisting law enforcement. With the suspect in custody and a vehicle now under examination, police are working diligently to uncover more details of the case and ensure justice is served.
