Toddler Discovered in Suitcase in Bus Luggage Compartment, Woman Charged with Child Neglect

A shocking discovery occurred on Sunday when a two-year-old girl was found inside a suitcase in the luggage compartment of a bus, leading to the arrest of a 27-year-old woman on charges of ill-treatment and neglect of a child. The incident, which took place during a planned stop in Kaiwaka, was brought to the attention of police by a concerned passenger.

According to Detective Inspector Simon Harrison, the bus driver noticed the suitcase moving and decided to open it, where he discovered the child. The girl was reported to be “very hot” but otherwise unharmed. She was immediately taken to the hospital for a thorough medical assessment, and is currently in a “minor” condition.

Authorities have praised the bus driver for his quick thinking and immediate action, which likely prevented a more severe outcome. Harrison emphasized that the incident is still under investigation, and further charges could be considered.

The woman, who has been charged, is expected to appear in the North Shore District Court on Monday. Oranga Tamariki, the child welfare agency, has also been notified of the situation.

An Intercity spokesperson confirmed that the company is aware of the incident and is cooperating with the ongoing police investigation. They stated that no one was harmed, and the service has resumed normal operations.

This harrowing event has sparked concerns about child safety and the responsibilities of transportation companies in ensuring the well-being of all passengers. It also highlights the importance of vigilance and prompt action in such critical situations.
