One in Custody After Man Critically Injured in Suspected Lower Hutt Shooting

A man has been taken into custody following a suspected shooting in the Lower Hutt suburb of Stokes Valley on Sunday morning. The incident, which has sent shockwaves through the local community, involved a firearm being discharged around 9 a.m. at Hanson Grove.

Emergency services responded quickly to the scene, where a 39-year-old man was found in critical condition. He was immediately transported to Wellington Hospital’s intensive care unit, where he remains in a serious but stable condition.

Detective Inspector Haley Ryan confirmed that police have executed a series of search warrants in the surrounding area and are continuing to conduct investigations. Officers are also visible in the region to reassure the public and gather information.

Authorities are still seeking the public's assistance in their investigation. Shortly after the incident, a dark-colored vehicle was seen fleeing the area at high speed, but it has not yet been located.

Detective Inspector Ryan emphasized the importance of CCTV footage in solving the case. She urged anyone with residential or commercial CCTV, or dashcam footage from the Hanson Grove area or the main arterial routes of Stokes Valley, to come forward.

“We’d like to hear from anybody in or around the Sladden Street area in Naenae, as well as Poole Street in Taita, who may have CCTV or dashcam footage,” she said.
