Community and Family Plan Hīkoi for Kaea Karauria as Police Continue Search for Killer

In the quiet suburb of Onekawa, the community is preparing for a powerful and emotional event as the family of slain 15-year-old Kaea Karauria organizes a hīkoi to call for justice and safer streets for children. Kaea, a promising student and rugby player at Napier Boys’ High School, was fatally stabbed on Mother’s Day in May 2025, sending shockwaves through the town and leaving his family, friends, and the wider community in deep grief.

The hīkoi, scheduled for August 17, will begin at Pukemokimoki Marae, just under a kilometer from where Kaea was found with fatal injuries. The event is described by the family as a “hīkoi with a purpose,” emphasizing the need for change, respect, and a safer environment for all children. It will be followed by a free community event at the marae, offering a space for reflection, support, and solidarity.

Police have been working diligently on the case, with Detective Inspector Martin James stating that they are “making good progress.” However, the investigation has faced challenges, with some individuals allegedly withholding information or even attempting to obstruct justice. Two people have already been charged in connection with the case: a teenage girl for wilfully attempting to pervert the course of justice, and a 21-year-old woman for allegedly instructing someone to destroy evidence.

Kaea’s mother, Kym Baker, has made several impassioned appeals for information, urging anyone who knows the truth to come forward. She described the pain of living without her son and the relentless grief her family has endured. In a public post, she wrote, “Kaea Loughlin Karauria was taken from us on Mother’s Day in the most heartbreaking way. And still, we have no answers.”

The family’s plea has resonated deeply with the community, who now stand in solidarity with them as they seek justice. Detective Inspector Dave De Lange emphasized that any witness tampering would be taken very seriously, and police are continuing their efforts to uncover the truth.

As the hīkoi approaches, the community is coming together to honor Kaea’s memory and demand accountability. The event is not only a call for justice but also a reminder of the importance of protecting children and ensuring their safety in the streets of Onekawa and beyond.
