A Heartbreaking Case: Police Investigate Injuries to a 3-Month-Old Baby

A 3-month-old baby girl was rushed to Wairarapa Hospital in Masterton last Friday, sustaining severe injuries suspected to be the result of non-accidental harm. The infant was immediately transferred to Wellington Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit before being moved to Auckland’s Starship Hospital, where she remains in critical condition over a week later.

Police have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the baby’s injuries and to hold those responsible accountable. Detective Inspector Haley Ryan confirmed that the injuries are not believed to be accidental, though the investigation is still in its early stages.

“These cases are complex and take time,” Ryan said. “Someone knows what happened, and we’re doing everything we can to get answers for a victim who has no way of speaking up for themselves.”

Police are working closely with Oranga Tamariki and Te Whatu Ora to support the baby’s family and provide assistance during this difficult time. Inspector Nick Thom, the Wairarapa area commander, emphasized the emotional toll the case has had on the baby’s whānau and the broader community.

“We’re also focusing on providing reassurance and being visible,” Thom said. “Silence helps no one. If you have any information, even if it seems insignificant, please come forward.”

Authorities have urged the public to contact police via the 105 phone service using reference number 250725/1624, or anonymously through Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.

This tragic incident has raised serious concerns about the safety and wellbeing of infants in the community. It serves as a stark reminder of the need for vigilance and the importance of reporting suspected abuse or neglect immediately.

As the investigation continues, the focus remains on uncovering the truth and ensuring justice for the vulnerable child involved. The community is being asked to remain supportive and proactive in providing any information that might help bring closure to this heartbreaking case.
