New Zealand Issues Nationwide Tsunami Alert After Major Earthquake in Russia

July 30, 2025 — In response to a massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake off Russia’s Pacific coast, New Zealand’s Civil Defence has issued a nationwide emergency alert, warning of potential tsunami activity and unpredictable surges along the country’s coasts. The alert, which was sent to all mobile phones across the nation, urged residents to stay away from the water and take immediate precautions.

The National Emergency Management Agency (Nema) stated that the quake, which occurred over 10,000 kilometers away, could generate strong and unusual currents that pose a serious threat to anyone near the shoreline. The alert emphasized that swimmers, surfers, and people fishing are particularly at risk, and urged all individuals near the water to move to higher ground immediately.

“Strong currents and surges can injure and drown people,” the alert read. “People on boats, live-aboards and at marinas should leave their vessels and move on to shore. Do not return to boats unless instructed by officials.”

According to Nema, the first wave was predicted to reach New Zealand shores at 11:59 PM near Lottin Point on the East Cape. Other coastal regions, including Auckland, Whangarei, Wellington, Napier, and Dunedin, were also warned of potential surges arriving between midnight and 2:34 AM. However, the agency emphasized that these times are provisional and may be adjusted as more information becomes available.

Reactions from the public have been mixed, with some expressing confusion over the distant origin of the quake. At a shopping mall in Christchurch, a woman said, “Russia is so far away, I don’t understand.” Another parent, holding her children’s hands, said, “Let’s just get home to be safe.”

Despite the distance, the alert highlights the global reach of seismic activity and the importance of preparedness. Civil Defence has urged all coastal residents to remain vigilant and follow official guidance closely. As of now, no major tsunami waves have been reported, but the alert remains in effect as authorities monitor the situation.

As the nation braces for potential surges, the alert serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of natural disasters and the need for continuous public awareness and emergency planning.
