Traffic Delays After Fatal Crash Near Auckland Airport

A serious three-vehicle crash near Auckland Airport on Wednesday morning has resulted in a fatality and significant traffic disruptions. Emergency services were called to the scene shortly after 4am on George Bolt Memorial Drive, near the intersection with Tom Pierce Drive.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) and Auckland Airport emergency crews responded quickly to the incident. According to police, one person lost their life in the crash, while a second individual from the same vehicle was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Photographs from the scene show a severely damaged blue car and a red vehicle with significant rear damage. Diversions have been set up, and while the airport's domestic and international terminals remain accessible, traffic congestion has caused delays for travelers.

An airport spokesperson urged people traveling to and from the airport to expect delays and to allow extra time for their journeys. George Bolt Memorial Drive, the main road connecting the airport to the surrounding area, is impacted, and detours are in place along Te Ara Kōrako. Travelers are being asked to follow the directions of emergency service and traffic management teams.

A lane has been opened for southbound traffic on George Bolt Memorial Drive to help ease the congestion. The Serious Crash Unit was also on site to conduct an investigation.

This incident highlights the importance of road safety and the need for continued awareness among drivers, especially near high-traffic zones like airports. As the investigation continues, authorities are reminding the public to remain vigilant and to follow traffic directions to ensure the safety of all road users.
