Videographer Daniel Nganeko Dies Following Assault Outside Rugby Club

29 July 2025 – A 37-year-old videographer, Daniel Nganeko, has died in hospital following an assault outside a local rugby club in New Plymouth. The incident, which occurred on Saturday night, has sent shockwaves through the community, with the rugby club and local organizations expressing their deep sorrow and calling for justice.

Nganeko was assaulted on Gladstone Rd, and he later succumbed to his injuries in Auckland Hospital. The Tukapa Rugby Club, where Nganeko was a passionate supporter, paid tribute to him on social media. They described him as someone who gave his time, energy, and heart to the community. In a heartfelt message, Tukapa chairman Scott Siffleet said: “We stand united in support of the Nganeko family and all those affected. In moments like these, we must draw on the strength of our Tukapa community – showing compassion, care, and solidarity.”

The Taranaki Community Rugby organization also expressed its condolences, acknowledging the “deep sadness” surrounding Nganeko’s death. They extended their “heartfelt aroha” to the Nganeko whānau, a long-standing and respected Tukapa family, and called for swift accountability in the justice process. “There is no place for violence in our sport or our community,” they said.

A 22-year-old man has been charged with common assault and is due to reappear in the New Plymouth District Court on August 21. Police are currently investigating the circumstances of the incident and have not ruled out further charges. “Our thoughts remain with the victim’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” a police spokesperson said.

Nganeko was a well-known figure in the media industry. According to his LinkedIn page, he graduated from Media Design School in 2015 and worked for organizations such as Specsavers, the National Gallery of Victoria, and 77 Productions. He also served as a visual journalist for Stuff from October last year until February of this year.

The tragic death of Daniel Nganeko has sparked a broader conversation about the need for stronger measures against violence in communities and sports. As the community mourns, many are calling for justice and a safer environment for all. “We trust that justice will be served,” said Siffleet, echoing the sentiments of many who knew Nganeko.
