New Black Caps Coach Eyes Stronger Performance from Zimbabwe in Upcoming Test Series

New Zealand’s cricket team, the Black Caps, are heading into a two-Test series against Zimbabwe with high hopes. Coach Rob Walter, in his first tour in charge, has expressed confidence in the team’s adaptability and readiness for the challenge ahead.

During a recent T20 Tri-Series in Zimbabwe, the Black Caps went unbeaten, securing a thrilling three-run victory over South Africa in the final. Walter credited the team’s ability to adjust to varying pitch conditions and different oppositions as a key factor in their success.

“We played on three different pitches through the series, and all of them played differently. The way the guys were able to adapt to the conditions and the opposition was excellent, both with bat and ball,” Walter said.

The coach experimented with his squad, using 18 different players throughout the Tri-Series. Tim Seifert, Rachin Ravindra, and Devon Conway emerged as the top run scorers, while Matt Henry took 10 wickets. Leg-spinner Ish Sodhi had the best bowling economy rate of 5.75, with Zak Foulkes close behind at 6.31.

Devon Conway, who was not originally named in the Tri-Series squad but was called up to replace the injured Finn Allen, made the most of his opportunity. He averaged 45 over four games, showcasing his potential.

“Dev is a quality player, and sometimes form can be a bit wanting, but ultimately these guys will shine at some point,” Walter said. “It was good to see him expressing himself and playing with some nice freedom.”

Now, the Black Caps are preparing for a two-Test series against Zimbabwe, starting in Bulawayo on Wednesday. Zimbabwe has had a tough start to their 2025 Test campaign, losing both matches in a recent home series to South Africa by a combined margin of 564 runs.

“They’ll certainly be a better team in this series,” Walter said. “They’ve got a couple of players coming back that will definitely strengthen what they look like. We’ll be paying attention to our standards so we’re looking to deliver a really good performance across the two Test matches.”

The first Test is scheduled for 30 July to 3 August, and the second will take place from 7 to 11 August at the Queen Sports Club in Bulawayo.

The Black Caps test squad includes: Tom Latham (captain), Tom Blundell, Devon Conway, Jacob Duffy, Matt Fisher, Matt Henry, Daryl Mitchell, Henry Nicholls, Will O’Rourke, Ajaz Patel, Michael Bracewell (first Test only), Rachin Ravindra, Mitch Santner, Nathan Smith, and Will Young.

With the series on the horizon, the Black Caps are looking to build on their recent success and continue their strong performance in Test cricket. The coming weeks will be a crucial test of their resilience and adaptability on the international stage.
