Helicopter Crash Near Matatā Injures Three, Emergency Services Respond Swiftly

A helicopter crash near Matatā in the Bay of Plenty region has left three people injured, prompting a rapid response from emergency services. The incident occurred on a rural residential property between Matatā and Thorndon around 3:16 PM on Sunday, July 27, 2025. According to St John Ambulance, emergency crews arrived swiftly, with two ambulances, two rapid response units, two helicopters, and a manager on site.

Of the three injured individuals, one was in a serious condition and was airlifted to Tauranga Hospital, while the other two, who were in moderate condition, were transported by ambulance to Whakatāne Hospital. The situation was further complicated by the remote location of the crash site, which required the coordination of multiple emergency services to reach the scene.

Police also arrived at the scene and confirmed reports of the helicopter crash. Fire and Emergency New Zealand’s northern shift manager, Josh Pennefather, stated that the service was notified at 3:18 PM and one fire truck was dispatched from the Matatā station. He added that there were no reports of anyone being trapped, and the fire department was assisting police and ambulance crews with one fire truck on site.

Matatā is located approximately 55 kilometers southeast of Tauranga on the coast, making the crash site somewhat remote and increasing the logistical challenges for emergency responders. The area, while relatively sparsely populated, is known for its rural properties and agricultural activities, which may have played a role in the incident.

While the cause of the crash remains under investigation, the swift and coordinated response from emergency services has been praised as a testament to the preparedness and efficiency of New Zealand’s emergency management system. Local residents have expressed concern over the incident, with many hoping for a full recovery of the injured individuals.

The crash has once again highlighted the importance of safety protocols for aerial operations in rural and remote areas, where emergency response times can be significantly longer than in urban centers. It also underscores the need for ongoing investment in emergency services and infrastructure to ensure that such incidents can be managed effectively.

As the investigation continues, authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity or potential safety hazards in the area. Meanwhile, the community has come together to support the injured and their families, demonstrating the resilience and solidarity that defines many rural communities in New Zealand.
